“I married a dy:ing millionaire so i could afford my son’s surgery —

PART 3

“You look frightened.”

“I am.”

“Good.”

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean, good?”

He opened a drawer.

Inside was a thick leather folder.

My name was written across the front.

Not my married name.

My maiden name.

I looked at it, confused.

“What’s that?”

“The reason I chose you.”

My mouth went dry.

“I thought you chose me because I needed money.”

“That was part of it.”

“Part?”

Arthur pushed the folder toward me.

I didn’t touch it.

“Open it.”

I hesitated before lifting the cover.

The first page was a copy of my marriage contract.

I recognized the signatures.

Mine.

Arthur’s.

The attorney’s.

But beneath the pages I’d read before the wedding were several documents I had never seen.

Bank statements.

Medical records.

Photographs.

Newspaper clippings.

My hands began to tremble.

The first photograph was of me.

I was standing outside Caleb’s hospital.

It had been taken almost three months earlier.

Before Arthur and I had ever spoken.

I turned the page.

Another photograph.

Me leaving the grocery store.

Another.

Me walking Caleb to school.

Another.

Caleb sitting on a hospital bench.

I looked up.

“Why were you watching us?”

Arthur’s expression didn’t change.

“I wasn’t.”
