The judge looked back at the photograph.

“Did you authorize her to shave your eight-year-old daughter’s head?”

Dustin hesitated.

“I didn’t know she was going to shave it completely.”

Judith turned toward him.

“You knew she needed consequences.”

“I didn’t say shave her head.”

“You said I could handle it.”

“I said discipline her.”

The judge raised one hand.

Both of them stopped.

I watched Dustin stare at the floor.

For the first time since this nightmare began, he looked less like my husband and more like a stranger whose life had collided with mine by accident.

The judge asked, “Why was the child being disciplined?”

Judith immediately answered.

“She was becoming disrespectful.”

“To whom?”

“To me.”

The judge’s eyebrows lifted slightly.

“What exactly did she do?”

Judith opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then she said, “She refused to apologize.”

“For what?”

“She embarrassed me.”

I felt Meadow’s fingers tighten around her purple elephant.

The judge noticed.

She leaned forward.

“Meadow?”

My daughter looked up.

The judge softened her voice.

“You don’t have to speak if you don’t want to.”

Then, almost too quietly to hear, she said:
