PART 3 : The Most Feared Man in the Restaurant Found His Daughter Asleep in My Arms—Then He Asked Me the One Question I Never Expected 030

The basement door had not been opened in twenty years.

Tony said it twice, as though repeating the fact might somehow make what waited behind it less real.

“It was sealed during the renovation,” he explained.

“The old bakery wasn’t structurally sound anymore.

We moved everything upstairs and closed it off.”

Dante stood with one hand on the rusted latch.

“And no one has been down there since?”

Tony hesitated.

“No one who had permission.”

Dante turned.

“That is not the same answer.”

Tony sighed.

“No.

It isn’t.”

Sophia still held my hand.

Her fingers were warm and sticky with cinnamon icing.

Whatever waited below us, she didn’t understand it.

She only understood that all the adults had suddenly become serious again.

“Do you want to help Chef Marco make another cookie upstairs?”

Sophia immediately glanced toward Dante.

He nodded.

“Go with Marco for a few minutes, principessa.”

She tightened her grip on me.

For one second, I thought she might refuse.

Then I remembered what Dante had told me.

She hadn’t been speaking.

She hadn’t been sleeping.

She hadn’t been trusting anyone.

Now she was being asked to walk away while the people around her whispered about secrets and disappearing mothers.
