Part2-THE MAID WAS MY MOTHER : After 6 years working abroad, I came home to surprise my mom in the $600k house I bought her.

Cancel.”
He stared.
“What?”
“The party.”
Danielle laughed nervously.
“Elena, come on.”
“I just flew thirty-one hours.”
“We can celebrate your homecoming too.”
“No.”
Julian’s voice hardened.
“These are important clients.”
“In my house.”
Silence.
There it was.
Danielle’s expression changed.
“Here we go.”
“What?”
“Your house.”
“Yes.”
“You haven’t been here in six years.”
“That doesn’t change the deed.”
Mom whispered:
“Please.”

I looked at her.
She was scared again.
I took a breath.
“Fine.”
Danielle smiled slightly.
She thought I had surrendered.
“I’m going to a hotel.”
Mom looked crushed.
“No.”

“Just tonight.”
“You just got here.”
“I know.”
I hugged her.
“I’ll be back in the morning.”
Danielle said:
“Stay. Seriously.”
“No.”
Julian shrugged.
“Suit yourself.”
That arrogance saved me.

If he had become kind then—
if he had apologized—
maybe I would have waited.
Instead, he turned toward Mom.
“Martha, can you finish those cushions before six?”
I looked at him.

He had forgotten I was standing there.
Mom nodded automatically.
Something inside me went completely calm.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
Julian frowned.
“What?”
“She’s not cleaning anything.”
Mom whispered:
“Elena.”
I picked up my suitcase.
“Enjoy the party.”
Then I left.

I did not go to a hotel immediately.
I sat in my rental car two blocks away.
Called my attorney.
His name was Greg Lawson.
He had handled the purchase six years earlier.
“Greg.”
“Elena?”
“I’m back.”
“Welcome home.”
“I need every document related to Mom’s house.”
Pause.
