PART 2 — THE WOMAN THEY NEVER REALLY KNEW

Colin stared at the papers in his hands as if the words might rearrange themselves if he blinked enough times.
Jessica reached for the first page.
“What does it say?”
He pulled it away from her.
“Give me a second.”
“Colin.”
“I said give me a second.”
I lifted my coffee and took another slow sip.
His eyes moved down the page again.
Then his face changed.
Not anger yet.
Confusion.

The dangerous kind of confusion that comes when the world stops behaving the way you expected it to.
“What the hell is this?” he whispered.
Jessica snatched the second page from the envelope.
I watched her read the heading.
NOTICE OF TERMINATION OF MONTH-TO-MONTH TENANCY.
Her mouth fell open.
“What?”
Colin turned the page over.
Then back again.
“This has to be a mistake.”
Jessica looked at him.
“They’re terminating the lease?”
“Yes.”
“When?”

“Thirty days.”
Jessica’s eyes widened.
“Thirty days?”
I placed my cup carefully on the saucer.
The tiny click sounded louder than it should have.
Colin finally noticed me.
“Mom, did you hear this?”
“I heard.”
“Our landlord is kicking us out.”
“That’s unfortunate.”
Jessica stared at me.
“Unfortunate?”
I raised one eyebrow.
“What would you like me to call it?”
Colin ignored that.
He started pacing around the kitchen.
“This makes no sense. We pay on time. Every single month. We haven’t violated anything.”
Jessica flipped through the papers.
“There must be a phone number.”
“There is.”
“Call them.”
“I’m going to.”
Then another sheet slipped from the envelope and fluttered onto the kitchen floor.
