PART 3-Five minutes after my boss fired me, he stopped me at the door and told me to repair the machine

PART 3 — THE EIGHT-MILLION-DOLLAR DISTRACTION
For three full seconds, nobody in Bay Three moved.
Eight million dollars.
Gone.
Not missing because of an accounting error.
Not delayed by a banking problem.
Transferred.
Five minutes before Horizon’s chief financial officer walked out of the building.
The repaired machining center hummed behind us as if nothing had happened.
That sound made the moment even stranger.
A few hours earlier, everyone had been terrified of losing a two-million-dollar machine.
Now we were staring at the possibility that the machine had only been used to distract us while somebody stole four times that amount.
Daniel Mercer was the first to move.
He turned toward the detective.
“Lock the building down.”
The detective raised one hand.

“I can request that security preserve access records and prevent company equipment from leaving, but we need to be careful about restricting employees.”
Daniel didn’t argue.
“Fine. Do whatever you legally can. But nobody destroys anything.”
Then he looked at Claire.
“Freeze every administrative account connected to finance.”
Claire nodded.
“I’ll call IT.”
“Not from your email.”
She stopped.
Daniel pointed toward the second-floor offices.
“If our CFO is involved, I don’t know what he can still access.”
The detective asked, “What’s his name?”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Victor Lang.”
