My late son’s best friend turned up at his funeral

PART 3 — THE GIRL BEHIND THE RED DOOR
The final message stayed on my screen.

But Jack lied to you about when you’re supposed to open it.

My husband read it twice.

Then a third time.

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t know.”

Lucy stood by the door to Room 14, looking from us to the phone.

“Who sent it?”

I turned the screen toward her.

“No name.”

The number was unfamiliar.

I typed again.

WHY DID JACK LIE?

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

My heart began beating so hard I could feel it beneath my ribs.

Then the answer came.

Because he knew you would obey him.

Another message followed.

He needed the box to survive the funeral. Not the year.

My husband looked toward the sealed cardboard box.

Something changed in his face.

“No.”

I knew what he meant.

Jack had written a date.

One year from today.

He had underlined it.

Twice.

He had even written MUM, I MEAN IT on the top.

And yet now some stranger was telling us that our son had deliberately misled us.

I wrote:

WHO ARE YOU?

The response took longer.

My name is Emily Carter.

I knew no Emily Carter.
