My Father Tried To Take My House—Then One Phone Call Changed Everything

Richard stood just inside my front door with his phone pressed to his ear, and I watched the color leave his face. The ambulance still had not reached the driveway. He was no longer paying attention to Daniel’s desk. Beside him, Kelsey finally stopped laughing.

Three weeks earlier, I would have thought there was nothing left in my life capable of frightening me more than the call telling me my husband was dead.

Daniel Mercer had been driving outside Columbus, Ohio, when the collision happened. One minute I was waiting for him to come home. The next, I was answering questions I barely understood while staring at the coffee mug he had left beside the sink that morning.

I was eight months pregnant.

Grief did strange things to time. Some mornings felt ten minutes long. Some afternoons seemed to last for days. I slept badly, forgot meals, and kept one of Daniel’s T-shirts folded under my pillow because it still smelled faintly like him.

The house became the only place where I could still imagine hearing his footsteps.

Daniel had bought it before we married. That much was true. What my father apparently never knew was that after our second anniversary, Daniel added my name to the deed.
