PART 3-After my affair came to light, my husband never touched me again. For 18 years, we lived under the same roof like strangers.

PART 3 — THE SECOND SIGNATURE
I didn’t sleep that night.
Jake gave me his bedroom and took the couch, but every time I closed my eyes, I saw Michael sitting beside my hospital bed eighteen years earlier.
His hand around mine.
His exhausted face.
His voice telling me I was safe.
And then I heard what he had said before I left the house.
“My signature isn’t the one you should be afraid of.”
At 6:14 the next morning, I stopped pretending I might sleep and got out of bed.
Jake was already awake.
He sat at the kitchen table with two untouched cups of coffee.
“Mom.”
“I’m okay.”
“No, you’re not.”

I sat across from him.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Jake asked the question I knew had been tearing him apart all night.
“Was the baby Dad’s?”
“I don’t know.”
“Could it have been?”
“Yes.”
“And could it have been the other man’s?”
“Yes.”
Jake looked down.
I hated that my forty-year-old son was being forced to carry the consequences of choices I had made when he was twelve.
“I’m sorry.”
“Stop.”
I blinked.
“What?”

“Stop apologizing for one second.”
He looked at me.
“You cheated on Dad. That was wrong. You’ve admitted that. But whatever happened in that hospital is something different.”
Hearing my son say it made my throat tighten.
For eighteen years, I had merged those two things together.
My betrayal.
My punishment.
I had treated them as if one automatically justified the other.
Jake reached across the table.
“Whatever we find today, don’t convince yourself you deserved it.”
At 8:37, we walked into Dr. Evans’s office.
Michael was already there.
He sat alone in the waiting room.
I stopped walking.
Jake stopped beside me.
Michael stood.
