My three kids told me, “Stop calling us so much. We have our own lives.”

Part2
I didn’t buzz the gate open.
I pressed the intercom button from my kitchen, where I could see them perfectly clear on my new monitor.
“Open the gate, Mom. We just need you to sign a few things before dinner,” Jessica said again, smiling up at the camera. That practiced, realtor smile.
I had seen that smile before. When she wanted Robert to co-sign her second mortgage. When she wanted me to babysit for a weekend that turned into two weeks.
“No,” I said.
Brandon’s face flushed. “Mom, don’t be difficult. We drove all the way here. We have paperwork for the house listing, and a power of attorney form so we can help manage your accounts. It’s standard. David said – “
“David Vance no longer manages my accounts,” I said calmly. “He hasn’t for three months. And he is currently being audited.”
The three of them went completely still.
It was Chloe who spoke first. “What do you mean, audited?”
“Thomas sent his firm a notice. Funny thing, Chloe. When we pulled the last five years of statements, there were quite a few ‘fees’ and ‘transfers’ that David couldn’t explain. Transfers that coincided with phone calls from you three asking about my balances.”
