“Five days after my C-section, my husband loaded

I looked down at Toby.

His tiny hand had escaped from the blanket and rested against my chest.

For five days, I had been terrified of everything.

The incision.

The sleepless nights.

The pain.

The possibility that I wasn’t doing enough for my baby.

But now, for the first time, I felt something stronger than fear.

I felt protected.

“Where am I supposed to go?”

“You’re going to one of my properties.”

I almost laughed.

“Dad, I don’t want a mansion.”

“This isn’t about what you want.”

His voice softened.

“This is about what you and my grandson need.”

I closed my eyes.

“Dad… I don’t want Jasper to know yet.”

There was a pause.

“Why?”

“Because I want to know what he’ll do when he thinks I’ve got nothing.”

My father’s silence lasted several seconds.

Then he said quietly,

“That’s my daughter.”

The bus turned toward downtown.

I watched the city pass through the window.

People walked along sidewalks carrying coffee.

Cars stopped at intersections.

Parents pushed strollers.

Everyone continued living their ordinary lives.

Nobody knew that mine had just changed.
