PART 4-After my affair came to light, my husband never touched me again. For 18 years, we lived under the same roof like strangers.

PART 4 — THE ELEVEN MINUTES

“For eleven minutes that night, Susan, you were dead.”
I stared at Michael.
The words were simple.
I understood every one of them individually.
Together, they made no sense.
“Dead?”
Jake whispered, “What do you mean, dead?”
Michael’s eyes never left mine.
“Your heart stopped.”
I looked at Dr. Evans.
She glanced down at the records.
“There is documentation of a cardiac arrest during your hospitalization.”
My knees weakened, and I lowered myself into the chair.
“How long?”
“The record indicates approximately eleven minutes between the initial arrest and sustained return of circulation.”
Eleven minutes.

I tried to imagine eleven minutes of nothing.
No Michael.
No Jake.
No guilt.
No fear.
No knowledge that somewhere inside the hospital, people had already made decisions about my body that I would spend eighteen years not knowing.
“What caused it?”
Dr. Evans carefully turned another page.
“The records suggest several factors may have contributed. Your overdose had already placed significant stress on your body, and you had experienced serious complications. I can’t responsibly reduce it to one cause from these records alone.”
I nodded slowly.
But Michael had said my mother didn’t leave the hospital believing I would wake up.
I looked at him.
