When Ashley finally left Grandma’s house that morning, she took the enormous wedding cake with her without paying a single dollar.

My grandmother sat down at the kitchen table and wiped her eyes.

“I don’t understand,” she whispered. “She promised she would pay me. I wouldn’t have agreed if I’d known she expected it for free.”

I sat beside her and held her hand.

“Grandma, you did nothing wrong. She took advantage of your kindness, and she knows it.”

Grandma looked at the cake stand where the enormous cake had been sitting just an hour earlier.

“I just wanted Daniel’s wedding to be beautiful,” she said sadly. “He’s my grandson, too. I didn’t want to cause trouble on his special day.”

That was what hurt me the most.

My grandmother was 73 years old. She lived on a modest pension, carefully counting every dollar to cover her groceries, electricity, and medication. She had spent three exhausting days making that cake because she wanted her family to be happy.

And Ashley had repaid her by laughing in her face.

I was furious, but I knew arguing with Ashley would accomplish nothing. She had always been good at twisting situations until she made herself look like the victim.
