“My husband came home one evening and announced, “”I’ve fallen for another

He frowned.

“What’s this supposed to mean?”

“It means that since you’ve decided to maintain two homes, you’ll need to understand what maintaining one actually costs.”

He scanned the figures.

“Why are you showing me this? I pay my share.”

“Yes. And from today onward, you’ll continue paying your agreed share of Kieran’s expenses and the obligations attached to our home, regardless of where you choose to sleep.”

Callum looked up sharply.

“Of course I will.”

“Good. Then the first folder shouldn’t bother you.”

He opened the second.

His expression changed.

It contained a list of the household responsibilities Maggie handled every week: school drop-offs, medical appointments, meal planning, laundry, permission slips, birthday parties, childcare arrangements, and the countless small tasks that had kept their family running smoothly.

At the bottom, Maggie had written a single sentence.

Being a father is not a shift you clock in and out of.

Callum shut the folder.

“This is ridiculous.”

“Is it?”

“I have always been a good father.”

“I know you love Kieran.”

“Then why are you making me out to be some terrible person?”

“I’m not. I’m asking you to understand that you can’t divide your life into convenient pieces and expect everyone else to adjust around you.”
