Part2-Five minutes after my boss fired me, he stopped me at the door and told me to repair the machine

PART 2 — THE CHANGES WERE MADE BEFORE I WAS FIRED
“I didn’t say I would do it before documenting what I found.”
Richard stared at me as though I had suddenly started speaking another language.
“Documenting what?”
“The condition of the machine when I arrived.”
“You already know what’s wrong.”
“I know three critical parameters were changed.”
Walter lowered the alarm sheet.
Mason stopped pretending to study the electrical cabinet.
Richard’s expression hardened.
“So change them back.”
I looked at him.
“That is exactly what I am not going to do.”

His voice dropped.
“Ethan, Meridian’s qualification run starts in less than seven hours.”
“And if I overwrite evidence of unauthorized changes, the first question tomorrow will be why I destroyed the record.”
Richard glanced toward the machine.
For the first time since I had returned to Bay Three, he wasn’t looking at the control panel.
He was looking at the people around it.
“Everybody out,” he said.
Nobody moved.
Richard raised his voice.
“I said everybody out except Ethan.”
I closed the maintenance laptop.
“No.”
His head snapped toward me.
“What?”
“I’m an outside contractor now.”
I tapped the temporary badge clipped to my shirt.
“You don’t get to decide who witnesses my inspection.”
Walter’s mouth twitched.
Richard noticed.
“Walter, leave.”
