Part 4 – I arrived home for Thanksgiving and discovered my parents’ house completely

Part 4 of 5

Her name was Rebecca Hale.

She was forty-six.

And Victor had not spoken to her in twenty-three years.

I learned those facts in the hallway while Victor sat ten feet away, arguing with a hospice nurse about whether two sweaters constituted excessive luggage.

“Why have I never heard of her?” I whispered.

Elaine looked exhausted.

“Because Victor doesn’t talk about her.”

“Brady?”

“He knows.”

Of course he did.

Another family fact everyone knew except me.

That thought was becoming tiring rather than shocking.

“Who is she?”

“Victor’s daughter from before we married.”

“Before you?”

“Yes.”

“Does he know you gave her money?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Elaine’s face tightened.

“Because she called me.”

“When?”

“June.”

“What did she want?”

“Help.”

I waited.

Elaine rubbed her thumb along the strap of her handbag.

“Her son was sick.”

Something in her voice changed.

“What kind of sick?”

“Kidney disease. He needed treatment. Insurance covered most of it, but not everything. Rebecca had lost work taking care of him.”

“And you gave her ninety thousand dollars.”

“Yes.”

“From Victor’s account.”

“Yes.”

“Without telling him.”

Elaine looked toward the room.

“I knew he’d refuse.”

“Why?”

“Because of what happened between them.”

I wanted to ask.
